| "You are responsible for your life-the power of God is within you [whether you are a Christian or not], above you and through you. You control your life.""I believe in the FORCE-I call it God." - Oprah Winfrey either that or she is turning into a jedi. i saw this lady checking out this book at the library and was immediately intrigued by the title. "The Gospel According to Oprah". i always thought that oprah had an unhealthy influence over the idolatry-loving north americans, but this really put me over the edge. as a person who is raised baptist, oprah really has a skewed knowledge of christianity. she states that through her talk show she is trying to enlighten people by bringing them access to the truth. how about her truth regarding her bottom line on her paycheck, being "lets see how much of a cut i (oprah) can get from book sales by promoting random books in my book club, without a moral concern of what it is promoting to the masses." there is so much "self-empowering" that goes on in oprah's shows that one really has to question the validity of "if you think of something with enough concentration or energy - you can achieve it."(a.k.a. "the secret") i get that from the perspective of good self-esteem: think positively, act positively. but when it comes to controlling your life through thoughts - it almost seems unrealistic. if someone gets into an accident, is it because they didn't wake up that morning and immediately think to themselves 'i'm going to make it to work safely today' or if a friend of yours gets a diagnosis of cancer - are you going to say to him... "dude, i told you to think about not getting cancer... you stopped didn't you, that one moment when you stopped to think about what you wanted for lunch and didn't concentrate on staying cancer free. thats when the cancer vibe hit man!" i know there are people out there that will challenge me by saying that by using positive thought is an intangible way of controlling one's life, the same as my dependence on God is based purely on faith. i just want to challenge you back with the question, why is it so hard to trust God then? it seems to me that people don't want the responsibility that comes with being Godly, or if you don't like that term, try on righteous, or even good. i think that if people agreed to the belief that there is a God, they concentrate on judgement and repricautions... something that you don't have to fear because of jesus. if you want to read a book, that might go against the norm and probably isn't on oprah's list... pick up the Bible, and read the new testament... and you'll find that God is not how media or oprah portrays Him. And maybe you'll begin to see God, and He'll become more tangible then your overwhelming anti-problem thoughts. do not use deception, nor distort the word of God - 2 Corinthians 4:2, guess oprah never got this far in the Bible. |
